#4 of my 2018 Shaw ProjectMy first exposure to The Millionairess was the godawful film from 1960 with Peter O'Toole and Sophia Loren They both should have known better you don't fuck with Shaw Sadly the film has tarnished the reputation of this gem The Millionairess is a brilliant and hilarious comedy Can a fabulously rich woman find happiness with a relative pauper? Can a woman with a father fixation come to terms with an oedipal mate? What happens when parents influence their children and their choice of partners from beyond the grave? The law is eual before all of us; but we are not all eual before the law Virtually there is one law for the rich and another for the poor one law for the cunning and another for the simple one law for the forceful and another for the feeble one law for the ignorant and another for the learned one law for the brave and another for the timid and within family limits one law for the parent and no law at all for the childShaw tells the story of Epifania Ognisanti de Parerga Fitzfasssenden a woman long on cash and low on morals and her descent into romantic love Along the way we meet her husband Alastair his mistress Seedystockings Epifania's lover Adrian Blenderbland and a mysterious Egyptian doctor Seasoning the mixture are a relatively sensible family lawyer Julius Saga a hotel manager and two delightfully distressed senior citizens Joe and his wifeShaw's play was written in 1935 with fascism on the rise and capitalism riddled with too many flaws for Shaw's Fabian taste and the plot strikes than a few resonant chords with our own times of massive bailouts and cheeky bonuses for the Masters of the Universe

This was an interesting little play It was a good comedic play and I had a some laughs though I was never sure what Shaw was trying to say I won't spoil the plot but have Led Zepplin's Stairway To Heaven playing in your mind The protagonist was a comedy machine and I was never bored when she was around which is 90% of the play So if one is curious I would suggest checking this out

I saw this play performed at the Resident Ensemble Players at UD wonderful and decided to read it to gain insight into Shaw's social commentary My edition of his plays has essays before a lot of them written by Shaw himself The essay before The Millionairess is On Bosses written in 1935 He explains that there are geniuses in this world like Epifonia the main character of the play who carry all before them We the common people are powerless to their will He sights men and women throughout history including Hitler However these geniuses of power usually are mad in some way He believes that Hitler's desire for a pure German race is ridiculous and impossible His pillaging and abuse of Jews will be his downfall The play is hilarious always and poignant at some points I highly recommend seeing it and reading it

What happens when you come across a millionairess? Well anything could happen but be assured you won’t ever forget it George Bernard Shaw has managed to write one of the most loveable hateful selfish fascinating characters in all of theatreEpifania Fitzfassenden Well that’s her married name her maiden name is much impressiveEpifania Ognisanti di Parerga Epifania comes to Mr Julius Saga ‘the worthless nephew of my late solicitor Pontifex Saga’ on the condition to change her will as she intends to commit suicide and leave everything to her unfaithful husband Alistair and his lady love ‘Polly Seedystockings’then things just go a bit strangeEpifania tells her solicitor how she met her husband and how in order to win her heart she gave him a small amount of money and he had only a few months to turn it into a large amount This is how she gets her men Half way through the play she meets an Egyptian Doctor who she falls in love with and she gives him this money offer to prove that her heart will be won however he has a task for her In order to be his wife she must get a job and live like ordinary folk only spending what she earns This is a riches to rags then back to riches again story but is a knock out comedy sensation This is an unusual play but the real treat is the writing it is so funny with British wit and cleverness one of the best plays ever written that is sadly overlooked

Somehow I feel that Shaw is enjoying the fact that the poor millionairess cannot find her true love Is he attributing her failure to selfishness or lack of manners or aggressiveness or all of them? Anyway her willfulness gives the play its energy I usually dislike love triangles in a book but I enjoy the scenes between the trio Epifania Alistair and Polly very much

For an intellectual George Bernard Shaw can be pretty damned funny I loved this play the dialogue is razor sharp and very modern It's hard to believe this was written in 1936 I always enjoy Shaw's prefaces to his plays and this one's take on bosses and why we follow them is interesting as well

  9. says:

This is my first time with this play but it is instantly one of my favorites by Shaw The ending disappoints as Shaw's endings often do but it is funny funny funny The points made about money and what it does to people and society are typically insightful Loved it
