Only buy this if you want a very basic description of creativity Even then consider that you can find cheaper free descriptions with supportive research on BBC IdeasI was waiting for this book in high anticipation after Cleese s excellent lecture on YouTube on creativity for a group of managers This was perhaps from the 1980s or 1990s and filled with thoughtful research I had anticipated that he would build this research into a solid dependable book he has had a few decades since then However this book is largely filled with generalising anecdotes and vague language lots of weasel wording that is surprising from someone with a pigging degree from Cambridge Very little of use it reads like he rattled this book off in a day or two

Some good observations from one of the great creative and professionally silly minds of our time With brevity akin to a pamphlet than a book I would have loved to have some fleshed out examples of specific creative projects and the stages which led to their solution yes I know there are a few instances recounted here but what I d have loved would be detail on the art of finding the premise for a comedic work ad campaign an invention an unclassifyable new aroma or a Space Brothers cult The author has focussed on tools for the individual creative but must know a great deal about how to function as a partner Cleeseshe length of a multi year project Fawlty Towers and as a survivor of rooms full of business egos or members of an often hysterical in both ways theatrical troupe You get the idea Cleese s insights are what you would hope for often surprising wide ranging and practical and they reveal his compassion for anyone who wants to get better at the fine art of making things up John Cleese Creativity is a generous bundle of advice and techniues which are battle tested and sure to make useful or silly ideas flow
