I can't tell what was greater how insulted or how disgusted I was by this book Not by the content saccharin prince with evil brother forced from his birthright um something about ghosts No the writing is to be blunt shitI have rules that I live by that define what I believe is a good book Want to know what they are? The opposite of everything that this book isAnyone here want to read about 12th century characters with 20th century values stapled to their paper thing character development? How about needless expositions placed within dialogue to make the dialogue make sense? I certainly don'tI didn't make 50 pages in this book I ride the T a scant 15 minutes in my daily commute but even that was too long of a time to be cooped up with this book Thank god a good chunk of the trip is above ground or I'd have had nothing to look at In less than 50 pages I put the book down and never looked back Waste of 8 bucks I don't mind telling youAlternative and opposite Tigana by Guy Gabriel Kay I might be misspelling the name of the author This is a book I cannot put downEDIT I was wrong about TiganaRating for The Summoner1 out of 6Only people who don't care at all about how a story is told will enjoy this novel Stay away

I'm usually not very critical of books outside of whether I liked them or not but The Summoner is an exception to this rule The cover is excellent the summary intriguing One does not see necromancers as the good guys very often or at all really With even the protagonist using what's generally considered darkevil magic I expected a dark gritty fantasyWhat I read was not In fact it reads very much like YA I don't know if the book was miss marketed or what but this is definitely not the dark fantasy hinted at on the cover The main character is twenty going on twelve complete with such overwhelming concerns such as whether his friends will still like him when they find out he talks to ghosts Yeah Said friends are little better even the soldiers and mercenary It would be slightly tolerable if the story was plot driven and didn't take almost half the book to actually startIf you can put up with the 100 pages of them wandering around angsting and reinforcing what a bad man the antagonist is you'll find the story once it gets going turns out to be all right if you like basic chosen oneuest type stories If you don't usually read a lot of fantasy and like books such as Eragon you'll probably find The Summoner to be a lot enjoyable than I did

Oh dear What can I really say about this book? Honestly I want to rip it apart There's cliché after cliché after cliché after cliché nothing is at all surprising even for me who skimmed a lot of the book the characters are stereotyped cardboard cut outs the action is predictable and feels like a video game the prose is lacking there is a great deal of space dedicated to events that drag out for too long and are not in any way important to plot or character building the dialogue is choppy and feels forced characters disappear probably killed but who knows? and nobody ever mentions them or misses them later on and you could use this book as an overview over clichés to avoid There's the magic sword the inherited sword that will keep you safe hint your grandfather's sword is likely to break than protect you there are names with random apostrophes and made up phrases that defies any property of language my personal pet peeve there's the main character who is brilliant at something without knowing it there are the two characters who bicker and argue about EVERYTHING which means that they are of course in love there's the main character who despite having avoided weapons practice most of his life suddenly is just as good as anyone else there's the fact that nobody is ugly you have the oooh I'm trying to avenge my family and it just happens to coincide with this Noble uest And yes Nearly all the characters are on some uest or another from the Goddess of course And then you have nearly everyone they meet who are not soldiers or slavers who despite the immense reward on their heads decide that they of course will risk their lives for some random stranger who is just passing by And did I mention that apparently you have to shoe your horses every morning and you can do this in the middle of a forest with no smithy nearby? In short it looked like a book I would love and ended up as the exact type of fantasy book I am trying my best to avoid If it was written many years ago I would have been able to ignore it but it's from 2007 With the plethora of fantasy books available now and the ability of so many authors to create something fresh and new it's really not an excuse I feel like I have read this story countless times before That said the book would have had potential if it had been properly edited for example I am genuinely relieved to be finishedThat said the book would probably be enjoyable for those who haven't read too much fantasy before who won't already be tired by that kind of plot

Boring I hate to hate on a female author for her style of writing but Goddammit if it isn't froo froo It reminds me terribly of bad Yahoo Chat RoleplayIts the tone man The Tone I can't freaking stand it Everyone chuckles The Point of View is 3rd person Omnicient I like that because we get not only what Martris thinks but it means that we also get to spy in on Kiara and Jared and get what they are thinking as well But at the same time I don't like it because its written like a movieSo it pops from whatever is happening wherever that is important to the story So we spied in on Arontala and Jared and Arontala gave away that he slipped a secret spell on the border of that Northern Kingdom so that whenever Prince Martris crosses the border a bunch of creatures from farther up north will start attacking and likely kill the Prince And all the while the rest of the book is going on to tell us about what Martris is doing with the Caravan in the meantimeSo I feel a little cheated in knowing already that there was a spell to ambush him when he gets across the borderI also feel a little cheated that I already know that Vahanian seems especially besotted with Carina even though he refuses to say so in as many words instead of having it mysteriously sprung on me later And I feel a little cheated in knowing that Kiara is going to shack up with Tris short for Martris even though I haven't read that farShe'll probably do it when she goes on her Journey Not so Mysteriously meeting him while following the will of the Goddess rolls eyesIn someone else's review of the book they said that they were impressed with Gail Z Martin's ability to tell the story in two thick books And really they're only thick because the text is so big which is annoying I read three paragraphs and already I have to turn the page after not so much has been said oO They were impressed with how she created a story of a Necromancer that wasn't so much gore and guts and evil and bad shit but was instead turning it into a good thing a Necromancer that HELPS peopleAre you all about to throw up yet? Because I am I bought the book because it was Chronicles of the Necromancer not Chronicles of the Romantic Ghost Helper

I literally signed up for Good Reads because I was so outraged by this book By doing so maybe there's the chance of hopefully saving anyone else the pain of picking this book up and getting even ten pages in If giving this a zero star rating was an option I'd do itI couldn't finish it I just couldn't finish it There are so few times when I cannot finish a book and this is one of them Nothing is decent about it except the pacing All of the characters are cliché ripped off from every bad fantasy movie and terrible role play in existence She pays attention to all of the wrong aspects her world building is poor her villains are brainlessly evil for literally no reason None of her characters can be sympathized with because they simply don't have any depth I just wow I hate itI can't believe I bought it Can't believe it was allowed to be published I can't believe that it exists That's allPlease spare yourself the trouble of reading this terrible fantasy novel Other beautiful stories await you certainly Don't waste your time or your money

First of all this book should be burned I am a book lover so I do not say that lightlyThe writing is bland no emmotional high lights or sweeping prose a 13 year could have written this bookThe plot which revolves around a young prince who is exiled cause his big brother killed the king and them he has to start a rebelion all the while tying to control his powers of the dead You can see the plot coming from miles away the story scream GENERIC and there is no big battle of even decent climax No now that I think about it there is not climax which is NOT GOODYou can not root for the characters because the bad guys are so cartoonishly evil its hurts to read Also there is no emmotion you can connect with youre not IN the story rather your watching a bad movie about the story The pacing is one of the few thing that meets par at least that is acceptable the plot moves foword at a nice rate Also the religion with diffrent aspects of the goddess IS NOT ORIGINAL This book is a waste of 6 dollars DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK IT WILL BE A MISTAKE DO NOT BUY THE BOOK

I was a bit hesitant going into this one because I'd read a lot of negative reviews I'm glad I ignored those reviews and read it anyways This was the kind of action packed story I enjoy and I don't care if it recycled uite a few common fantasy elements As a reader I want a fast moving story and characters I like and Martin gave me bothThe writing had some rough spots for me which Martin has really smoothed out in her subseuent books but they never pulled me out of the story I was invested in the characters and what was happening to them In an era of Grimdark fantasy with despicable protagonists it's nice to see authors who don't follow that trend

Here is a new fantasy series that should rightly stand alongside the other great writers within this genre on the bookshelf next to Kate Elliot Brent Weeks Janny Wurts and many others who all have produced something of outstanding caliber The chronicles of the necromancer is a four part series comprising of the summoner as book one the blood king as book two dark haven and dark lady’s chosen as book four which concludes this epic saga that is overwhelmingly good These eye catching books stand out not only because of their striking captivating covers but also being something refreshingly original and uniue taking fantasy fiction to a whole new level This spectacular book marks the debut of a great new talent with the beginning of an epic story by a writer who shows her accomplished skill and visionary imagination Here I found something unmatchable in originality engrossing and absorbing which has since become one of my all time favorite series of this genreIn a world of magic and powerful sorcery Martris Drayke’s life will never be the same again when his brother assumes the throne by murdering his father hence his once secure world begins to spiral out of control Martris leaves the kingdom with a handful of loyal acuaintances who are willing to stay by his side to try by repudiating his father’s death and restoring honor once To fight against the living Martris’ only hope is to harness and control his own magical powers to take on the allies of the dead calling on them for aid thus closing the gap between life and the afterlife Ultimately Martris wants revenge and closure of the futile death of his father; hence he learns to understand the true meaning of loss and of life itself A character driven tale in which one is able to empathize and relate to the characters on such an intimate and personal level where you can feel their emotions their pain which touches your inmost soul Truth drawing and engaging this was a book that I was unable to put it down for even a second as I lost myself within its pages that transported me to a different world full of danger mystery and magic Whilst reading I was so engrossed within Gail Z Martin’s absorbing writing that daily life around me was blocked out as if my mind had been plucked from my body sending chills down my spine as I sat in constant suspense wanting to read on This action packed fast paced adventure is thrilling and breathtaking sending the reader on a uest of a lifetime that is comparable to Robin Hobb or Terry Brooks by leaving the reader spellbound The combination of a complex detailed plot within an imaginative setting by distinctive characters makes this series not just a good one but a great one which once read will leave you wanting This is epic fantasy at its very best and one that I grantee will captivate you making you fall under its spell that which you won’t want to let go After reading the chronicles of the necromancer I cannot wait to read of this authors work which if it is anything like Martris Drayke’s story can only be incredible and staggering If you have not encountered this author or series as yet then I strongly urge that you do so as it will impact upon your literary experiences ultimately changing your perception of the fantasy genre

To be honest I think the two star rating is a bit generous There is no confusing Gail Martin for George RR Martin that's for sure This is the prototype of the trashy fantasy novel The characters are cliche and entirely unmemorable The plot is predictable and contains every hackneyed element you can think of The plot twists to the extent that you can call them that are entirely predictable because they are so cliche The writing is generally poor especially anything involving emotional reactions although the pacing is good especially for fight scenes The romantic dialog is even worse than the romantic dialogue from the Star Wars preuel moviesBut every once in a while I like the trashy cliche fantasy novel The archetypes of characters getting into predictable trouble but getting out of it in predictable ways And the fact that she spends 10 pages describing in detail the clothing of every character well you can just skim that And the fact that a character who finds out hisher person that heshe cares for than anything else in the world is alive after all indications suggested otherwise responds with a hey that's great and then we're back to what heshe is wearing well you can fill in the blanks in your own mind It happens so often you get pretty good at itRegardless I wouldn't recommend this book to any but the most die hard fantasy fans who have exhausted the interesting books out there Even then it's the sort of thing you read when you're stuck at an airport when your flight has been delayed for 4 hours than something you should make time to read

This novel was an easy read it barely took me 2 days of casual reading to breeze though the 600 pages While there were some portions which impressed me specifically the 8 faces of the goddess much of it was unoriginal It was fun enough to read but failed to grab me There were also a few major editing errors to be found Many folks love the book and I suggest you read it It won't take long and you might be captivated where I was not Simply consider borrowing before the purchase
