The lanes and rats underground As both guardian and policeman the Night Watchman will relentlessly hunt down any intruder who threatens the peace and security of his city Nothing and no one has disturbed his nightly routine until nowA beautifully written story full of suspens. Gr 2 5 Colour and shape demand attention in this French import with its eye catching vision of city life and the Watchman who walks its streets As the sun sets Fischer s screen printed art silently introduces readers to this bustling city establishing a contrast between day and night Most people have clocked out but for the Watchman and a few others work has just begun Wilson s elegant translation of Labrune s words lulls us into the same sense of ease that the introduction does however the Watchman s nights are far from uneventful His beam of light cuts through the darkness and when the Vagabond appears dramatic lines and a striking combination of colours illustrate the chase Chapters mark the events of each night the first is routine while the rest have to do with the Watchman s encounter with the Vagabond the mythology of the city and the actions of the frightened people This hybrid is difficult to place the writing is exuisite and atmospheric but well beyond the reading level of the picture book crowd and on the flip side the vast amount of space devoted to pictures makes this unsuitable for Juvenile Fiction Children will enjoy the uniue story though and adults can appreciate the artistry and underlying topics VERDICT An advanced picture book that is well worth pondering the right place issue and one worth promoting to put it on the radars of potential fansreviewed for School Library Journal
