This book just had too much going on and not much romance to be honest The big bad was dealt with 23 into the story and then there was a family emergency that delayed the wedding There was no passion no real declarations of love The hero just realised how great the heroine was And another issue she was only considered to be beautiful after she had lost a lot of weight it would have been better if that was not a part of the story

Chosen by the Lieutenant had a nice premise but I never empathized with the characters feelings or became invested in the relationship between Amanda and Phipps I think the problem lies with Anne Herries detached style there s a marked tendency to tell the audience that Miss Hamilton despaired or Phipps realized that he knew far less about his intended than he d assumed It would be far interesting to let us see the proof of it for ourselves because then perhaps I might ve felt connected to the main couple As it was I continued because I have a completist streak and I thought either Cynthia or Jane might marry by the end The plot felt rather thrown together view spoilerwith an unnecessary illness at the eleventh hour and a villain that I racked my brains to remember though he s present for the first two thirds of the book hide spoiler

Charming story with interesting charactersThis was a lovely story and the heroine being rather plain and plump rather than stunningly gorgeous was a great start The hero was handsome if a little lukewarm about the heroine to start with If you are annoyed about people going on about being overweight prepare to be triggered My one star of criticism would be that the heroine loses weight and then subseuently becomes attractive to the other characters which was not needed She was lovely as she was A story to while away a wet afternoon with being both comforting and entertaining

Burgeoning relationship surprises everyone especially Phipps who discovers that his sweet sensible fiancée is also brave and passionate Suddenly the role of dutiful husband looks a lot attractive.. Amanda Hamilton is overweight She is also in love Follow her journey from a little dumpling to a beautiful young woman as finding love teaches her that she doesn t need dessert to be happyMeet Alex and Brock likeable characters who each have about two scenes Meet Lieutenant Phipps the honourable gentleman who marries for money who might have been likeable if he had had a personalityThe poorly written story of the miraculous weight loss of a girl whose modesty might just be insecurity with a cast of characters who have little depth and no growth except that Amanda loses weight
