Paula Daly is a wonderful and much respected author and after thoroughly enjoying The Mistake I Made I was truly looking forward to her latest book Open Your Eyes This exceedingly clever and well thought out story has been intelligently planned and meticulously plotted to produce a hugely addictive and amazingly compelling book I was hooked and found it impossible to put downBlurb When Jane's husband Leon is brutally attacked in the driveway of their home and in front of their two young children she has to face reality As he lies in a coma Jane must open her eyes to the problems in her life and the secrets that have been kept from her if she’s to find out who hurt her husband – and whyThe story also had a writingpublishing theme to it which I found very interesting being a passionate reader myself and I liked how the author wrote the story as if it was a sort of autobiography from the viewpoint of Jane This is the second book I've read recently that incorporated a brain injury and the repercussions following it The author covered this part of the novel with understanding and empathy from points of view of both the victim and the family left to deal with the recuperationThe fabulous conclusion literally had me in goosebumps and it certainly kept me guessing till the end As you can see I really really enjoyed this story and it will definitely be a favourite of mine this year I highly recommend Paula Daly and her books she has a great way of depicting ordinary people with every day lives and producing excellent psychological and domestic noirs I will be constantly on the look out for future books and back stories I've haven't yet read A fab 5 stars

375 starsLiterary wars A violent act And of course CRAZINESS Open Your Eyes is a riveting entertaining psychological thriller about a semi famous author who is violently attacked with a nail gun suffers a brain injury and loses his memory His wife a wannabe writer is left picking up the pieces while at the same time trying to figure out who would try to hurt her husband in such a horrific manner She digs where she’s not supposed to finds some incriminating evidence and puts herself in a danger While it might sound rather formulaic this is not the case as there is a WHOLE lot going on than it first seemsJane’s voice draws the reader in Told completely from her perspective it was refreshing to have one narrator and one main storyline vs multiple storylines narrators etc The storyline isn’t fully believable but it didn’t bother me too much as it wasn’t so extreme or over the top that it got in the way of my enjoyment Overall I found this to be a fun but sometimes slow read I could have done without the final chapter it left me rolling my eyes a bitI received an ARC of this book from NetGalley and Grove Atlantic in exchange for an honest review

My reviews can also be seen at StarsJane is frustrated It feels like her writing career is going nowhere She has six unpublished novels and the rejection is starting to get to her Her husband Leon on the other hand is a well published author He tries to reassure her “It’s not your fault they don’t want your workbut I don’t get why it has to hit you so hard every time” But he doesn’t get it He’s a successful PUBLISHED author His work pays the bills Of course Jane is happy for him but it doesn’t make the constant rejection any easier to takeBut on Leon’s 46th birthday as they are heading to his mother’s house for dinner Leon is attacked by an unknown assailant The attack leaves him in a comaJane doesn’t understand Who would do this? And why?As Jane tries to deal with the fallout of everything that has happened she wants answers But what she ends up with is uestions One thing that does become clear is that her husband has been keeping secrets She can’t pretend everything is fine any Everything is FAR from fineWhat else has Leon been keeping from her? What will happen ifwhen Leon wakes up from his coma? Will Jane finally get the answers she deserves? And if so will she be able to handle what she hears? So many secrets So many liesJane starts to wonder if she knew her husband at allI’ve enjoyed uite a few of Paula Daly’s previous novels so I was really looking forward to reading this novel After a really intriguing beginning I did find it a bit difficult to get into the story However I’m really glad I stuck with it as it definitely picked up again Even though I needed to suspend my disbelief at times I still enjoyed the storyWith an engaging plot and some intriguing characters “ Open Your Eyes ” was a uick and interesting read I am looking forward to reading from this authorI'd like to thank Bantam Press for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest review

A compulsively good twisty thriller that will make you consider the nightmare a life can become following a single moment This is my first Paula Daly and I had a blast reading Open Your Eyes I actually wish I could start this review with the last line of the book because it was THAT GOOD But of course the last line would spoil some things about the story so I won’t post it here But if you’ve read Open Your Eyes by Paula Daly or when you do savor that last line I’m still thinking about it days laterAbout the BookJane Campbell avoids confrontation at any costs Given the choice she'll always let her husband Leon a bestselling crime writer take the lead while she focuses on her two precious young children and her job as a creative writing teacher After she receives another rejection for her novel Leon urges Jane to put her hobby to rest And why shouldn't she when through Jane's rose tinted glasses they appear to have the perfect house and the perfect life? But then Leon is brutally attacked in their driveway while their children wait uietly in the car and suddenly their perfect life becomes the stuff of nightmares Who would commit such a hateful offense in broad daylight? With her husband in a coma Jane must open her eyes to the problems in her life as well as the secrets that have been kept from her Although she might not like what she sees if she's committed to discovering who hurt her husband and why Jane must take matters into her own handsReflectionWell I completely loved this book Let’s start with the main drama of the book—Leon’s injury In the few minutes that Jane went inside to grab things for their trip Leon is attacked in a horrifying way and it leaves permanent damage Even beyond the coma Jane has to go through the experience of living with someone who had a traumatic brain injury And this injury has completely changed Leon He has memory issues and personality changes that would be so difficult to live with I have a colleague who was married to someone who suffered a traumatic brain injury and it was so awful His personality completely changed and eventually it was no longer safe for her or her children to be around him And the saddest part is it is not his fault So you want to stay and do the right thing Brain injuries can truly change a person’s personality They may be angrier suffer from poor decision making Of course I won’t say how it plays out in this book You’ll have to read and see Often as the swelling reduces many of their new issues will lessen Will Leon be so lucky??And then we have the mystery itself Aside from the changes to Leon what was he not telling Jane before the accident? She’s stuck with uestions and no answers As Jane investigates troubling information will come to light and she’s left alone unable to talk to Leon about it I loved Jane and her storyline I though Paula Daly handled the realities of this change to Jane’s life in such an authentic wayAnd then we have a delightful storyline about writers Not only are Jane and Leon writers but they have friends and other colleagues who enter the plot I was fascinated by the dynamics between Leon—a successful writer—and Jane—a still unpublished writer Each has their own hang ups For Leon how will he know he can deliver book after book? And for Jane how will she know when to keep trying to catch her break? And then we have the whole cast of writers in between This storyline sang to my writer’s soul It is a real treat and I think many readers and writers will relate to the issues presented in the bookAnd then we are back to that ending Loved it It was so perfect I can’t wait for readers to get to the closing line and reflect back on the book I’m still processing it days laterMany thanks to the team at Grove Press for my copy of this book to review

How well do we know our spouses? Our friends? Our neighbors? Jane becomes determined to learn why someone would want to harm her husband Her husband is a best selling Author and she can't think of anyone who would want to harm him He writes books for crying out loud There are a few little twists turns and revelations in this book I enjoyed the story and found it to be an enjoyable read I particularly liked that I didn't uite know where this book was going at times and found I enjoyed being along for the ride Even though there is an attack in this book the reader is told about it we do not read about the actual attack in detail There is no graphic violence in the book so most readers will be able to enjoy this book without having to worry about reading any graphic or disturbing scenes I enjoyed that most of the interactions were character driven and especially loved when Jane got feisty She is not someone who enjoys confrontation but grows in confidence as the book progressesThank you to the publishers and Edelweiss who provided me with a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review The thoughts and opinions in this review are my ownRead of my reviews at wwwopenbookpostcom

“OPEN YOUR EYES” rocked my boat Did you know that some people who suffer from Traumatic Brain injuries will have increased sexual compulsive desires? Did you also know that brain injuries are common in the UK than breast cancer? Both of these things are true And both are true for Leon Campbell Jane and Leon Campbell live in Liverpool with their two young children Since coming out of an induced coma from his traumatic brain injury Leon began acting out his increased sexual compulsive ‘inappropriate’ behavior Leon’s public hobby of masturbation at the hospital was bad enough —but it certainly wasn’t going to fly at home around the kids Jane was seriously worried to have Leon return home justified concerns When Jane asked Dr Letts “how do families cope with a brain injured spouseparent?” The doctor replied “I’m not sure everyone does cope” YIKES Nothing about Leon was the same as before he was attacked TWO NAILS TO HIS HEAD WITHIN MINUTES by who knows who THAT’S WHAT READERS ARE GOING TO FIND OUT AND MORE SOMEbut it’s not only WHO DID THIS TO HIMpolice were doing their investigation but how to survive and manage daily lifeJane was petrified Leon had no memory of the weeks preceding his attack other than he felt certain it wasn’t Jane but Inspector Ledecky hadn’t ruled her outLeon had no job they were in debt Leon showed signs of erratic violence without warning by screaming and yelling profanity and Jane has discovered lies and secrets Leon was keeping Jane had just taken a teaching job needed the money and couldn’t possibly leave Leon alone to watch the children HE NEEDED WATCHING Leon was a published author Jane wrote too Their close friends were writersButTheir neighbors were ‘not’ their friends nor writers And Jane felt certain her neighbors or their odd son who visited often was watching their houseWith all the worry stress going on inside the Campbell household neighborhood issues for Janeas caretaker mother Financial provider she was threatened physically and verbally by a prison inmate where she was assigned to teach and guide with creative writing We begin to see that the size of this puzzle book is bigger and complicated than our eyes first saw at the beginning of this novel As readers our eyes open wider the closer we get to the end of the book The ferocious suspense in the dog eat dog world of writers hungry to be published is as hard as nails literally and figurativelyAwesome great book When’s Paula’s next book? This is fiction thriller suspensesmart normal ish classy suspense psychological thriller without being bloody trashy nonsense Many thanks to PAULA DALY I’m SUCH A FAN Thank you GROVE ATLANTA I’m a fan of you guys tooThank You Netgalley it’s been awhile Taking ‘a mostly’ sabbatical this year has been good for me But I always appreciate having the door open for return visits

35Leon is a successful crime author with a devoted following He lives a uiet unassuming life with his wife Jane and their 2 young children When an attempt is made on Leon’s life Jane scrambles to hold her family together while searching for answers why anyone would want to intentionally hurt LeonIt doesn’t take much digging to discover there’s a great deal about her husband than she could have ever imagined Has she been married to a complete stranger? How is she supposed to live with a man who had all these secrets? There were sections of this book that were a bit scattered but overall the story line was entertaining and it flowed easily and uickly While some plot lines were easily deduced there was still enough surprises along the way to keep me guessing And the ending Welllet’s just say😳This was my first book I’ve read by Paula Daly but will definitely be looking for of her works in the futureA buddy read with SusanneThank you to NetGalley Grove Press and Paula Daly for an ARC to read in exchange for an honest review

We're all in some kind of recoveryPicking up the shattered pieces after the boot heel of life grinds us down into almost unrecognizable grit Kinda separates us from those who will survive another round and those who will notIt's Leon's birthday and the car is packed with little Martha and Jack in the back seat Jane his wife swallows down the unsettling thought of another celebration at Leon's mother's house The car is idling in the driveway when Leon insists that Jane go back into the house to retrieve a few cans of his favorite beer She spots Lawrence and Rose the next door neighbors from hell outside their house Lawrence starts to argue with Leon about how their family cat relieves itself in their garden Jane dashes inside gladlyBut when Jane slides back into the front seat she is horrified to find Leon incoherent behind the steering wheel and bleeding badly They rush him to the hospital Leon is suffering from a tramatic brain injury and remains in a coma What could have happened within the moments when Jane left her family in the car?Paula Daly has an uncanny talent for getting into the inner workings of her main characters If you read Just What Kind of Mother Are You? you will know exactly what I'm talking about She smacks her female lead character alongside the head with almost insurmountable challenges throughout the book Before his injury Leon was a very successful crime novel author Jane taught creative writing courses at the local college with never having the joy of being published Daly touches on the book publishing world in her novel as well and we as readers will heighten our antennaeAnd with a bricklayer's finesse Paula Daly counterbalances level after level of hidden secrets about ol' Leon that Jane never saw coming Her feelings become mixed with sizzling frustration as her world begins to fall apart She must take care of Leon while at the same time keep the family home from going under Daly makes it clear that this is reality for those who are caregivers for brain injury victims In a word OverwhelmingWith no definitive leads the police begin to suspect Jane herself But Jane knows someone is watching their house What in the world did Leon step into in his past? And I'll leave you here dear readers This one is a mighty read that will be calling your nameover and over again Whoa Make that a double WhoaI received a copy of Open Your Eyes through NetGalley for an honest review My thanks to Grove Atlantic and to Paula Daly for the opportunity
